What are Uterine Fibroids?

Uterine Fibroids are muscular noncancerous tumors located in the uterus. According to Office on Women’s Health, “Fibroids can grow as a single tumor, or there can be many of them in the uterus. They can be as small as an apple seed or as big as a grapefruit.” They can grow in different areas of the uterus: inside the womb, outside of the uterus, and/ or within the wall of the uterus (Office of Women Health, 2019).

Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids may include:

· Heavy bleeding

· Painful periods

· Lower back pain

· Feeling fullness or pressure in the pelvic area

· Frequent urination

· Complications during pregnancy and labor

· Reproductive problems, such as infertility

· Pain during sex (Office of Women Health, 2019)

Women who are in their 40s and early 50s are most likely to develop fibroids. “About 20 percent to 80 percent of women develop fibroids by the time they reach age 50” (Office of Women Health, 2019).
